Let us understand more about gilt mutual funds and explore some of the best options available in the market today.

Gilt Mutual Funds

Mutual fund schemes that identify as gilt funds invest mainly in treasury bills and government securities. Securities issued by the Government are called Government Securities or G-Sec or Gilt. Treasury Bills are short term debt instruments issued by the Reserve Bank of India on behalf of the Indian Government. There are different types of gilt mutual funds available in the market. For example, long-term gilt funds invest in government securities of medium and long-term maturities. Some Gilt schemes have specific plans, which are open only for investments from public trusts, or provident funds, or superannuation and gratuity funds, or pension funds, or religious or charitable trusts, etc.

Features of Gilt Mutual Funds

One of the most important purposes of this fund is to allow investors to invest in low-risk investment instruments, such as government securities. Hence, gilt funds are a good investment option for people who have a low-risk appetite.Furthermore, to lower the risk, investors can invest in short-term gilt funds. However, long-term gilt mutual funds are also available.

Risks associated with Gilt Funds

These securities practically do not carry any credit risk. Credit risk pertains to the risk that the issuer of the security may default on repayment. Since the government is unlikely to default on its obligations, Gilts are viewed as safe as there is no credit risk associated with them.Although there is practically no risk of default and liquidity is considerably higher in the case of government securities, the prices of long-term government securities are very sensitive to interest rate changes. Greater the proportion of longer-maturity securities in the portfolio, higher would be the fluctuation in NAV.

Returns of Gilt Funds

The low risk of default is reflected in the low coupon or interest rate of government securities. The yield on Gilt securities is generally the lowest in the market for a given tenor. Since non-Government issuers can default, they tend to offer higher yields for the same tenor. The returns of gilt funds are comparable to that of a liquid scheme.

Who Should Opt for Gilt Mutual Funds?

If you want to safeguard your money and are looking for a low-risk investment instrument, then gilt mutual funds can be a good option for you. Unlike bond funds, which might invest a part of your money in private instruments, gilt mutual funds invest in government securities. Therefore, they are a safer option.

Benefits of Investing in Gilt Mutual Funds

There are various advantages of investing in gilt mutual funds. The risk associated with gilt funds is low. Also, investing in gilt mutual funds doesn’t require a lot of effort. Gilt mutual funds are highly liquid. Therefore, investors are allowed to exit when they want. One of the most important benefits of gilt mutual funds is low credit risk. These securities are safe as the government is liable to pay the interest.

In Conclusion

Although Gilt funds are most suited to debt investors looking for secure and stable returns who have a view that interest rates will decline, investors must analyze their return expectations, liquidity needs, risk appetite, and investment objective before investing in gilt funds.
