
Form 49B is an application form for getting your TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Number) allotted, as per section 203A of the Income Tax Act 1961 . A TAN number is a unique identification number assigned to entities that are responsible for the deduction of tax at source, as per the guidelines by the income tax department. It is mandatory to quote your TAN number while filing the returns, both TDS (Tax deducted at source) and TCS (Tax collection source) .
Applying for TAN
An application for TAN can only be made through TAN form 49B . You may apply either online at the website of the income tax department or by physically going to the facilitation centres.In the case of physical applications, no supporting documents are to be submitted apart from form 49B. For online applications, you need to print the acknowledgement displayed after submitting the form and send it to the income tax department.
Form 49B Contents
Below details are to be provided in the form:
- Details related to office name, address, Government type, person’s designation responsible for making payments on behalf of the company, company’s division and branch information needs to be entered. Also, you need to specify whether the TAN number will be used by an individual or HUF (Hindu undivided family).
- The complete address including street name and number, block numbers, state and town details has to be specified.
- Details regarding the nationality of the deducting entity.
- PAN number has to be specified if required.
- The existing tax collection number and tax deduction number has to be mentioned.
- You need to specify the date on which the form is being submitted.
- Finally, the person who is applying has to specify his details for verification of the above-mentioned details.
- Lastly, the applicant has to sign the form to verify the details mentioned in the form.
Things to Keep in Mind While Filling the Form
- The form is to be filled in block letters and English. You need to fill one character in each box, including alphabets, numbers, etc.
- If you use your left-hand impression, you need to get the form attested by a Magistrate/Notary Public/Gazetted officer with an official seal and stamp.
- The details of assessing officer for TDS/TCS should be provided by the deductors and collectors. This information can be obtained from the Income Tax Office.
- The collectors and deductors must also provide the range code, area code, AO number, etc. TIN facilitation centres or income tax offices can provide information on this.
- Make sure to specify the designation of the person who is responsible for collecting the tax.
- The applicant’s address should be an Indian address.
Documents and Fee for TAN Application
- For online applications, an acknowledgement is displayed as soon as the form is successfully submitted. This acknowledgement has to be printed and sent to the income tax office. For physical applications, no other document has to be attached other than the form 49B.
- An application fee of Rs. 50 is charged while submission of form 49B. This fee is non-refundable, even if the application gets rejected due to any issues.
