For instance, you can easily check your refund status, learn about deduction details, and even e-verify your returns.But before you can start enjoying these benefits, you'll need to complete the registration process and log in to the Income Tax e-filing website. Don't worry though, it's a simple process that anyone can do with just a few clicks. Have you heard of e-filing? It's basically a way to submit your tax documents to the tax department without having to deal with any physical papers. All you need is an internet connection and you're good to go!
Now, before you can start e-filing your taxes, you'll need to register yourself on the income tax e-filing portal. Here's what you'll need:
- Your PAN (Permanent Account Number)
- Your contact details, including your email address and phone number
- Residential address proof
- Bank Statement (For income proof)
- And of course, access to the internet
Registration Process
The process to register on income tax portal is very convenient to everyone
- Password information

- Secret question
- Visit the income site website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
- Register yourself on the home page.
- After registering yourself the page will direct towards a page to select the user type.
- After all the basic information is ready, it's time to fill out the registration form. But before you do, there are four important things you need to keep in mind:
- After submitting the form, a 6-digit OTP will be directed to the registered mobile number and email id of the tax payer.
Basic Requirements
Before you begin the login process, there are a few basic requirements that you need to meet. Let's take a look at these essential requirements:
General Requirement
In order to log in to the e-filing portal, you must be a registered user with a valid user ID and password.
Using OTP for E-filing
If you're planning to use OTP for e-filing, you need to have access to your registered email ID and phone number. Additionally, you should have an Aadhar OTP and your Aadhar should be linked with your PAN.
Using Net Banking
To log in through net banking, you need to have your PAN linked with your bank account.
Using Static Password
If you plan to use a static password, make sure it's valid, not expired, and has not been used before.
Using DSC (Digital Signature Certificate)
For this method, you need to have a valid and active DSC secured from a Certifying Authority provider of India.
Using ITD Mobile App
Lastly, if you're planning to use the ITD mobile app, you must have already downloaded it and logged in to the app.By meeting these requirements, you'll be able to successfully log in to the income tax e-filing portal and file your taxes easily.
Procedure to login in Income tax portal for e-filing
Once you have completed the registration process for the income tax portal, you can easily log in to the portal. Here's how:To log in to the income tax portal, go to the Income Tax Department's official website and click on the "Registered User" button on the right side of the page, and you'll be redirected to a page where you need to enter your login username and continue with the login process.It's important to note that your user ID for the income tax portal will be your PAN card number.
Various methods to login in the income tax department
There are a total of 14 ways in which the taxpayer can login and file the income tax and they are as follows:(* - This ITD login method has not been yet made available yet, sooner this will be available for all the people ITD basically means Income Tax Department)
Let’s understand the major 7 login methods in detail:
- The taxpayer has to login intothe e-filing portal homepage
- After that the taxpayer needs to enter the PAN in the user IDtextboxand clickContinue.
- A tab will appear with the following information: Confirm yourSecure Access Message . Enter yourPasswordand clickContinue.
- Select the option to receive the 6-digit OTP on primary mobile number through voice callor Text Message. ClickContinue.
- Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number or email ID registered on e-Filing portal and clickLogin.
- The OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only and the taxpayer will have 3 attempts to enter the correct OTP.
- On successful validation, the e-Filingdashboardis displayed.
- The taxpayer has to login into the e-Filing portal homepage.
- Enter your PAN in theuser IDtextbox and clickContinue.
- After that selectOTP on mobile registered with Aadhaarafter confirming your Secure Access Message and clickContinue. In case of using Aadhaar OTP as a higher security option, the taxpayer needs to login with their user ID and password and on theHigher Security Optionspage, clickOTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar>Continue.
- If the taxpayeralready has the OTP, selectalready have OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaarand go to Step 6. If valid OTP is not available, clickGenerate OTP
- On theVerify, it's youpage, clickI Agree to validate my Aadhaar Details>Generate Aadhaar OTP.
- Enter your 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number registered with Aadhaarand clickLogin.
- Post successful validation, you will be taken to the e-FilingDashboard.
- The taxpayer has to login the e-filing portal homepage and click login.
- After that the person has to enter the Aadhaar in the user ID textbox and click Continue.
- Select OTP on mobile registered with Aadhaar after confirming your secure access message and click continue. In case of using Aadhaar OTP as a higher security option, login with your user ID and password and on the higher security options page, click OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar > Continue.
- If you have already received the OTP, select I already have OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhar. If valid OTP is not available, click Generate OTP.
- On the verification page, click I Agree to validate my Aadhaar Details > Generate Aadhaar OTP
- After that enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number registered with Aadhaar and click login.
- Post successful validation, you will be directed to the e-Filing Dashboard.
- Go to the e-Filing portal homepage and click Login. In case of using Net Banking as a higher security option, enter your user ID, password and click Through Net Banking on the Higher Security Options page.
- If you have not opted for the e-Filing Vault Higher Security option, click the Net Banking option found at the bottom of the page under Other Ways to Access Your Account.
- Choose the preferred bank and click on continue.
- Read and understand the disclaimer. click continue
- Log in to your net banking account using your net banking user ID and password.
- Post login, select the link to the e-filing portal on the bank's website. It will direct you to the e-filing dashboard.
- Go to the e-Filing portal homepage and click Login
- Enter your PAN in the Enter your User ID textbox and click Continue.
- Confirm your Secure Access Message. Enter your Password and click Continue.
- Click Try Another Method.
- Select Static Password and click Continue.
- Enter Static Password and click Login.
- Post successful validation, the taxpayer will be taken to the e-Filing Dashboard.
- Go to the e-filing portal homepage and click login.
- Enter your PAN in the enter your User ID textbox and click Continue.
- Confirm your Secure Access Message. Enter your Password and click Continue
- Select Bank Account EVC / Demat Account EVC and click Continue.
- Login using EVC page is displayed. Click I already have an EVC (Note: If you do not have an EVC, click Generate EVC. You will receive the EVC on your mobile number registered with your bank / demat account.)
- Enter the EVC and click Login
- Post successful validation, you will be taken to the e-Filing Dashboard.
- Go to the e-Filing portal homepage and click Login.
- Click Mobile App under Other ways to access your account.
- Click Try another way to Login
- Select Time Based - One Time Password (t-OTP).
- You will be taken to the Login using time based - one time password page. Open the ITD Mobile App, login and click on Code Generator. A code with 30 second validity is displayed.
- Enter the code on your system and click Continue.
- Post successful validation, you will be taken to the e-Filing Dashboard.
- Login using OTP on registered mobile number & e-mail ID:
- Login using Aadhaar OTP (including the case where e-Filing vault option is enabled):
- Login using Aadhar number (Only for Individual Taxpayers):
