When you’ve got hitched or about to get married, a lot of things change – you get a new surname, new family, and even your priorities change. One of the matters that often takes a backseat is portability of health insurance plan once you say, “I do.” You may not think that it is prudent, but you must port your health insurance in order to ensure sufficient coverage at all times.Health Insurance Portability is a provision extended by The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) that allows an individual insurance policyholder (including family health insurance) to change from one insurance company to another or one plan to another, without losing the benefits you have accumulated like the waiting period for covering pre-existing diseases. Here are three ways to port your health insurance after marriage:

  1. Family floater plan: If you already have a family floater health insurance plan , you can add your spouse and continue with the same plan renewal process. With a family health insurance cover, it is much easier to add new members or new-born. It is a comprehensive insurance cover that offers better features and benefits at lower premium rates.
  2. Changing details in an individual policy: If you’re already covered in an individual health insurance plan, you can simply opt for portability of the policy by changing the maiden name. Against the name change request, you have to produce a marriage certificate document. If you both have individual health plans, this will be the best option.
  3. Include partner in the policy: If you have an existing health insurance policy with a reasonable rate and adequate benefits, you can simply add your partner’s name in the same policy. This requires you to submit a marriage certificate, KYC document and medical test report of the partner whose name you want to include in the health plan. This is a good way to manage premium for you and your spouse as the financial liability gets reduced to some extent.

These are some of the ways to port your health insurance after marriage. As you prepare to accept new responsibilities within the new family, you must also ensure that you have the same type of financial security even after you get hitched.
