Professional Tax in Maharashtra: Rate Chart

The professional tax amount is calculated based on your salary and fixed tax charges. Normally, you pay around ₹200 to ₹300 every month. The correct value can be determined from the table provided below:

Applicability of Professional Tax in Maharashtra

The tax is applicable for the following set of individuals:

  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
  • Self-employed individuals and salaried employees
  • Company/ Co-operative Society

Note : In the case of salaried employees, the employer is responsible for paying the professional tax on behalf of their employees. This is why they deduct a specific amount from the pay slip and submit it to the municipal corporation.

Professional Tax in Maharashtra: Exemption List

The following people are exempted from paying professional tax in Maharashtra :

  • Senior citizens who are above the age of 64.
  • Parents whose children are handicapped physically.
  • People suffering from more than 40% disability.
  • Badli workers in the textile industry.

How to Pay Professional Tax in Maharashtra Online?

Once you know if you are liable to pay professional tax and the amount for the same, you should know the process to pay this tax.Here is a step-by-step guidance for easy payment of professional tax in Maharashtra:

  • Step 1: Open the Maharashtra GST Department’s official website and choose the ‘e-payment’ option.
  • Step 2: Select the correct option as per your professional payment tax status.
  • Step 3: Choose from one of the professional tax act options - PTEC (Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate) or PTRC (Professional Tax Registration Certificate).
  • Step 4: Next, provide all the necessary details, including the amount payable, period of professional tax payment, contact number, etc.
  • Step 5: Select the ‘Proceed to Payment’ option.
  • Step 6: Complete the payment via your choice of payment mode. Once completed, an acknowledgement slip is generated. Save it for any future reference.

Second Option

There is another way to clear payment. The complete process is described below:

  • Step 1: Open the official website of the Sales Tax Portal of GRAS (Government Receipt Accounting System) and choose your tax type.
  • Step 2: Give Taxpayer Identification Number, i.e. TIN. It is a 12-digit combination for PTRC and an 11-digit one for PTEC.
  • Step 3: Click on the ‘Submit’ button. Next, provide all necessary information like employer name, mobile number, office address, etc.
  • Step 4: Select the payment type and the payment period after the ID is generated automatically.
  • Step 5: Enter all details related to payment and then choose the ‘Proceed’ option.
  • Step 6: A payment summary will be displayed. Recheck all details and click on ‘OK’ if everything seems correct.
  • Step 7: A government Reference number will be generated. Choose ‘OK’ to navigate to the bank’s website. Make the payment here.
  • Step 8: On successful payment, a receipt will be generated. Save this for future reference.

Due Date for Paying Professional Tax in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, the due date for professional tax payments is dependent on the enrolment date.

  • Businesses registered before 31st May of a particular year must pay the tax by June 30 of the same year.
  • Those enrolling after 31st May in a financial year are required to make the payment within one month from the date of enrolment.

Penalties for Non-Payment of Professional Tax

The Maharashtra government imposes penalties in the following situations:

  • Late enrolment for professional tax.
  • Submitting incorrect details during the enrolment process.
  • Late in paying the professional tax against the given due date.
  • If an enrolled individual does not pay professional tax on time, a penalty of 1.25% per month is charged. Employers who delay or fail to make the payment must pay interest at a rate of 2% per month on the outstanding amount.
