What is GSTIN?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax system introduced by the Indian government on July 1, 2017. It replaced multiple taxes such as service tax, VAT , excise duty, etc. and simplified the tax structure in India. Under this system, every registered taxpayer is assigned a unique identification number called the GST Identification Number (GSTIN). In this article, we will discuss the Goods and Services Tax Identification Number in detail.GSTIN is a unique 15-digit identification number assigned to every registered taxpayer under the Goods and Services Tax system. It is issued by the GSTN (Goods and Services Tax Network) and is used to track all the transactions made by the taxpayer. The GSTIN is based on the PAN (Permanent Account Number) issued by the Income Tax Department.

BENEFITS OF GSTIN

  1. Compliance: The GSTIN facilitates compliance with GST laws, rules, and regulations. It makes it easier for businesses to file their tax returns, claim input tax credit , and comply with other GST-related provisions.
  2. Transparency: The GSTIN helps to improve transparency in the tax system. It provides the government with a better understanding of the taxpayers' transactions and makes it easier for them to monitor compliance and prevent tax evasion.
  3. Input Tax Credit: The GSTIN makes it easier for businesses to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) for the taxes paid on their purchases. The ITC can be claimed only if the supplier has declared the details of the transaction in their GST return and if the buyer has matched these details with their own GST return .
  4. National Presence: The GSTIN enables businesses to operate across the country without having to worry about state-level registration. Once a business has a GSTIN, it can operate anywhere in the country without having to obtain separate registrations in each state.
  5. Legitimacy: The GSTIN helps to establish the legitimacy of a business. It provides a unique identification number that can be used to verify the business's credentials and ensure that it is registered and compliant with GST laws.
  6. Online verification: The GSTIN can be used for online verification of a taxpayer. This helps in verifying the authenticity of the taxpayer and ensures that there is no tax evasion.

Structure of GSTIN

The GSTIN is a 15-digit alphanumeric code that is divided into five parts. The structure of the GSTIN is as follows:

  • The first two digits represent the state code as per the Indian Census 2011. For example, the state code for Delhi is 07, while the state code for Maharashtra is 27.
  • The next ten digits are the PAN number of the taxpayer.
  • The 13th digit represents the entity code of the taxpayer. This is based on the number of registrations the taxpayer has within a state. For example, if a taxpayer has only one registration within a state, the entity code would be 1. If the taxpayer has multiple registrations within a state, the entity code would be different for each registration.
  • The 14th digit is the Z (check digit), which is used for error detection and set as default.
  • The last digit is the check code which is used to detect errors. It may be denoted by either a number or an alphabet.

For example, if a taxpayer in Pune has a PAN number of AAAAA1111A and has only one registration within the state, the GSTIN would be 07AAAAA1111A1Z0.However, the cost of obtaining for GSTIN and registration for GST is free of cost.
