What is TDS?
TDS , also known as Tax Deducted at Source, is a means of collecting income tax at the source of income. In India, this method involves deducting a certain percentage of the payment amount by the payer at the time of payment. This helps ensure timely tax collection by the government, without causing undue inconvenience to taxpayers.Let's say you are a freelancer who has been hired to complete a project for a company. The company pays you a total of Rs50,000 for the project. Under the TDS system, the company is required to deduct a certain percentage of the payment amount as tax, which is then remitted to the government.Suppose the applicable TDS rate for your work is 10%. In that case, the company will deduct Rs. 5,000 (10% of Rs. 50,000) from your payment and remit it to the government as tax on your behalf. You will receive the remaining amount of Rs. 45,000 as your payment for the project. When you file your income tax return at the end of the financial year, you can claim credit for the TDS deducted by the company. If the total tax liability for the year is less than the TDS amount deducted, you will be eligible for a tax refund. On the other hand, if the total tax liability is more than the TDS amount deducted, you will need to pay the difference as tax.
TRACES Portal
