We all know the importance of drinking water daily. In fact, our bodies remind us of this fact regularly by making us feel thirsty. This is because water is important for our body to function normally and be healthy. Everything from our blood to our various cells consists of water. We use water for circulation and transportation of oxygen and nutrients to the whole body. Our body also uses water to maintain physical balance, help with digestion and the absorption of nutrients.
Water is used to detox the body and to regulate the temperature. For the most part our bodies maintain a steady temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius. At this temperature all our organs work optimally. During hot, humid weather, the surrounding temperature causes the body temperature to rise. We quickly start to set things right by sweating. As the sweat evaporates from our skin it has a cooling effect and restores normal body temperature.
However, in the process of sweating we are losing water. Water loss increases when we exercise or do any kind of physical activity when it’s hot. Over time, the body senses that it needs more water and we start to feel thirsty. It is important that we don’t ignore this signal and start to hydrate as soon as possible. If we don’t drink water when we are thirsty, dehydration sets in which in turn affects all other functions including temperature regulation.

Usually, we feel thirsty before we reach this point of dehydration, which increases the importance of hydration at the earliest. If already dehydrated, then is it a good idea to add a little rock salt to the water before drinking. One teaspoon per litre of water is enough. You can also eat citrus fruits or watermelon to hydrate the body.
The hot, humid conditions can cause dehydration because we sweat more in this climate. While sweating helps regulate body temperature, we lose a lot of water causing us to feel lethargic and develop headaches. Drinking adequate water as soon as we feel thirsty can prevent dehydration and keep the body functioning normally.
