6 tips for a healthy family lifestyle

A family that stays healthy together stays happy together. It’s a simple truth that can be a cornerstone of any healthy household. If you and your family are healthy, you will always have the energy to be active and have fun as a unit. Everyone in the family might not have the same tastes, so keep all preferences in mind when you choose to stay healthy as a family. Here are a few simple but effective tips a family can use to stay healthy and strong:-

1. Fixing free time for activities

Keep a track of each of the family members’ daily activities for one week. This will enable you to make a calendar, based on everyone’s daily routines, to find some time each day to schedule some healthy physical activities. This could also highlight a few activities, which could be considered a little unhealthy so they can be rectified. At least three times per week, allow 30 minutes of family activity time, where everyone can get together and play a sport or go for a walk etc. You can include one Sunday where the activity could be for as long as 60 minutes. You could go to the beach or a nearby park and play cricket or badminton or just enjoy a nice brisk walk. This is a great way for any family to strengthen their bond as a unit and can set a good example for the younger ones.

2. Eating a Healthy Breakfast

Never skip your breakfast; there’s a reason they say it’s the most important meal of the day! However busy you may be, if the kids are getting late for school, skipping breakfast is just not a good idea. A good healthy breakfast sets the tone for you and your family’s day. If you do happen to belong to a family that is always on the go, choose simple to make breakfast options or those that can be prepared the night before; so no matter how late you are, you can always spend at least 15-20 minutes to have a good morning meal. Here are some great options.

3. Eating dinner together regularly

In the traditional Indian family, eating dinner together was quite important, but this isn’t always practised in today’s fast-paced world. But how does eating together help you stay healthy as a family? It’s quite simple; by eating at the table without the distraction of a TV or a computer ‘screen’ it’s easier to monitor your food intake. You can consciously eat the right proportions, being fully aware of just how much your body needs. This can prevent you from overeating or binging while you’re watching TV. Of course, it’s also a great way to spend some quality time with the family whilst discussing the day’s events.

4. Get regular check-ups

For family members over 30, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of getting a health check-up as regularly as possible, at least once or twice a year initially and perhaps a little more frequently as you age. Fix a ‘family health check day’ to show some solidarity with the older members and maybe even go out for a little treat after your reports are all clear. After all, celebrating good health is also important!

5. Spending “quality” time

Stress can be a major cause of concern that can disrupt family life and affect your health. Having someone to talk to and a strong support system at home can be extremely reassuring. You are healthiest when you have someone you can talk to, about the things that cause stress. Spending quality time with a spouse, your children or parents can alleviate some of that stress just through conversation and share your thoughts and feelings. A little laughter can go a long way in dealing with stress.

6. Family vacations

Everyone needs some time off; children from school, from work, from running a household or even just plain old routine. Planning a vacation or weekend getaways with the family, in advance, can save you a lot of money and also create a little excitement in the house. These trips can be short 3-4 day outings to longer travel plans; the effect will be the same. Time off with the family can help you recharge when you get back to your daily routines.

These health tips for your whole family will always keep you happy and healthy. They’re simple enough to follow and will certainly help you build a good and healthy lifestyle at home. All you need is a little patience and time to make these healthy habits a part of your life, but it’ll all be worth it for a strong family to stay healthy together. So start today and you will see a changed, healthy, happy and energetic family very soon.
