1) Income level

The most important criterion to establish whether a person is eligible to get an EBC certificate is the income level. If your household’s annual income is less than INR 8 lakh per annum, for the economically backward class certificate apply online easily.

2) Land/property ownership

Individuals who own land can apply for an EBC certificate. However, there are certain norms to be followed:

  • If you own agricultural land, it shouldn’t be larger than 5,000 acres
  • If you own a residential flat, the area shouldn’t be larger than 1,000 square feet
  • If the residential plot is located in a municipal area, it shouldn’t be larger than 900 square feet.
  • If the plot is located in a non-notified municipality sector it must be less than 1800 square feet.

3) Caste/Community

People who belong to Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) cannot apply for the economically backward class certificate.
