The heart is one of the life-sustaining organs in our body. It pumps blood throughout the body and supplies oxygen and essential nutrients to heart tissues. The human body needs a regular nutrition supply to remain active, and a heart that does not function at its optimum capacity can lead to fatal consequences. Therefore, it is critical to maintaining heart health. And, as doctors worldwide recommend, eating a healthy and proper diet and indulging in regular work out is the best way for having a healthy heart. You must also periodically check your heart health. But, if you are wondering how to check your heart health, here are a few simple tips. These are a few tried and tested tests that you can try at home to check the heart health.
Test 1 – Checking the Resting Heart Rate
This is a simple test. To determine the resting heart rate:
- Sit quietly on a chair for about five minutes.
- Place the index and middle finger over the carotid artery near the jawline at the side of the neck.
- Count the beats for about 20 seconds and multiply the number by three to determine the heart resting rate.
Based on the heartbeat rate, you can draw the following conclusions:
- If the heartbeat count is less than 60, then you have a healthy heart and is functioning correctly as it should.
- If the heartbeat count is between 60-80, then your heart cannot be counted in as a healthy heart. But, it is not a cause of worry. Diet control, regular exercise, and making small lifestyle changes like giving up smoking, alcohol consumption, and drinking soda can improve the heart’s health.
- If the average heartbeat count is more than 30, your heart is working hard to pump blood, and you may need to consult your doctor. Make sure that you don’t ignore this, as it can lead to serious consequences. Diagnosing the problem and taking appropriate remedial action at an early stage can prevent any major issue.
Test 2 – Exercise and Recovery Method
You can do this test from the comfort of your home. For this test, indulge in some vigorous activity like running or any other cardio for about two to three minutes. The machine should have a function that shows the heart rate, and you must note down the number. After exercising, wait for one minute and repeat the same exercise for the same amount of time and note down the number again. Now subtract the first heart rate number from the second number. If the difference is less than 18, it means the heart can recover quickly from the exercise, and it is functioning well. But, if the difference is more than 18, then your heart may not be functioning at its optimum capacity. And, you may need to consult a doctor.
Test 3 – Checking your waist circumference
You can also check the health of your heart at home. You can spot the abnormal cholesterol levels, hypertension, and other heart risks from your waist size. The fat accumulated around the belly is generally related to the hardening of arteries, inflammation, and hypertension. For this test, wrap a tape around the waist near the belly button and measure it. The waist measurement should not exceed half of your height. If it is more, you must consult your doctor as you may have an underlying risk of serious heart-related disease.

You are now aware about how to check heart health at home. Take these tests periodically to ensure that your heart is strong, healthy, and working efficiently.
