What is the Ayushman Bharat Health Account?

Commonly referred to as ABHA, Health ID, or ABHA number, the Ayushman Bharat Health Account is an identification number given to individuals who apply for it. Not only will such individuals get easy access to their past or historical medical records, but they will also save themselves from the time-consuming, complicated and risky task of preserving all their previous medical or health records in paper form. Each individual is allotted a 14-digit account number as a unique identification number. They get digital access to their health-related records from anywhere in India through this number.

ABHA – The Digital Health Revolution

ABHA is an integral part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in September 2021 to create a central repository that would store the medical history of Indians so that it becomes easy to track and share the same with clinics and hospitals. It aims to develop the backbone necessary to support the integrated digital health infrastructure of the country, helping bridge the existing gap among different stakeholders of the healthcare ecosystem through digital highways.

Download ABHA Card
ABHA is an innovative initiative by the National Health Authority (NHA) to create a one-stop digital platform for all the medical and health needs. It has an aim to make the healthcare ecosystem more centralised and convenient. The 14-digit unique number which is linked to the ABHA digital health ID enables easy access to all the medical records, prescriptions, diagnoses and health history.

You can create your 14-digit unique ABHA number by going to Create ABHA and following the instructions. First, you will be prompted to verify Aadhaar credentials and next, your phone number will be verified. Upon successful verification, your 14-digit ABHA number will be generated and ready to use.

This ABHA number can be linked to your new and existing medical records, which includes hospital records, lab reports, doctor prescriptions, etc. In addition to linking, these records can also be shared with registered health service providers and doctors.

Once you successfully complete the ABHA generation process, you can click on “View Health Card” and download your ABHA digital health ID card pdf.

Your ABHA card can be downloaded anytime by visiting ABHA, logging in using your 14-digit ABHA number and xxxx. Click on “View Health Card” and download your ABHA digital health ID card pdf.

Alternatively, you can download “ACTIV Health App” from the App Store or Play Store and download your digital health ID card pdf by logging in using your 14-digit ABHA number.

To be eligible for Ayushman Bharat Health ID Card, you must be a citizen of India.

You can create ABHA Health Card ID using your Aadhaar card, provided it is linked to your mobile number. Follow the steps given below -

  • Visit ABHA and click on “Create ABHA”.
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and click “Send OTP”.
  • Enter OTP and click on “Verify OTP”.
  • Enter your mobile number and your desired ABHA handle. Handle contains of letters, numbers and special characters like full stop, comma and @.
  • Once your handle is shown as “Available” click on “Create ABHA ID”.
  • Enter OTP and click on “Verify OTP”.
  • Your ABHA ID setup is now completed. Click on “View Health Card” to download your ABHA card.

The ABHA digital health ID card is voluntary, and you have the option to temporarily deactivate or permanently delete the ABHA account. You will always have the option to reactivate your ABHA number in future if you have deactivated your profile.

Step 1: Log in to the ABHA account with your ID and click on “submit.”

Step 2: After you have successfully logged in, tap on “My Account” and select “Deactivate/Delete Health ID” (Deactivation of ABHA digital health ID card is temporary, and your account will not be permanently closed; you can reactivate you account whenever you want to. However, if you want to permanently delete your ABHA number, you can do that as well) and click on “Continue” to deactivate or delete your digital health ID.

Keep in mind that deleting the account will amount to the loss of all data stored in the ABHA health ID card.

Registering for the ABHA and 14-digit unique identity number will not take more than a couple of minutes. You will be required to fill out all the relevant information, authenticate your mobile number and verify your Driving License or Aadhar Card.

In case you opt for Driving License you will have to visit the nearest ABHA facility to verify your license before generating the ABHA Health ID Card.
