Domiciliary Hospitalisation

Domiciliary Hospitalization is a special provision in a health insurance policy, wherein the insured patient is hospitalized while he/she is at home.

When is Domiciliary Hospitalization applicable?

To be considered for domiciliary hospitalization, certain conditions must be fulfilled:

  • The treatment should be carried out for an illness, injury or disease for which hospitalization was required. However, the patient could not be hospitalized either due to non-availability of accommodation at the hospital or because the condition of the patient did not allow him/her to be shifted to the hospital

  • The minimum duration of the treatment should be at least three days

However, there are exceptions to this provision as well. Conditions such as Bronchitis, Epilepsy, Asthma, Cough, Cold and Influenza, Diabetes Mellitus and Insipidus, Pyrexia of unknown origin for a period of fewer than 10 days, Chronic Nephritis, Psychiatric or Psychosomatic Disorders, Diarrhea, Dysentery, and Gastroenteritis, Arthritis, Gout, or Rheumatism, Hypertension, Tonsillitis and Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, Laryngitis, or Pharyngitis do not qualify for domiciliary hospitalization under most policies. For a complete list of these conditions, you should read the terms and conditions of your health insurance policy carefully.

How can you avail Domiciliary Hospitalization

Domiciliary Hospitalization is available only with select policies. These policies may have a higher premium compared to regular health insurance policies. The conditions under which the treatment is covered at home also differ from policy to policy. Often, insurance providers are strict about offering this coverage, and your claim will get approved only if the provider is satisfied with the reason for home treatment. It is important to note that Homeopathy, Ayurveda, and allied treatments are not covered under this clause.
