Don’t expect much if you have been unmindful about your belongingsMost travel insurance policies would offer coverage against loss or theft of your belongings or other valuables. However, you should not expect much if you have been heedless about things by keeping them in an unsecured place or trusting them with somebody you don’t know well.
Tip: Be careful with your belongings and keep them with yourself at all times. Remember that you will need to lodge a police complaint, in case of theft, explaining in detail what you had been up to at the time of such a loss.
Don’t bother claiming against an unspecified medical conditionHiding any medical condition from your insurance provider isn’t a good idea. That’s because most travel insurance policies have a bar on pre-existing disorders, claims against which would not be met enthusiastically. Should you decide to travel despite your doctor having asked you repeatedly not to, chances are you would have to suffice yourself with a clear disapproval from your insurer.
Tip: Be honest while disclosing details of pre-existing conditions, if any, to your insurance provider.
You’d need divine intervention if you have been recklessLoss of baggage, medical emergencies or personal liabilities notwithstanding, chances are your claim would be outright rejected should you have been indulging in excesses - including binging on alcohol and warming up to recreational drugs - that might compel you to behave recklessly and making yourself vulnerable to risks and damages.
Tip: If you are reckless and tend to go overboard with things, try and curb your instincts. Know a few incidences of reckless behaviour that might result in claim rejection.
Don’t claim if delay in baggage receive doesn’t exceed 24 hoursSure, the likelihood of baggage loss or theft is one of the more crucial reasons behind purchasing a travel insurance policy in the first place. However, even the most comprehensive of policies from top insurers would have a time clause - more than 24 hours in most cases - attached to baggage loss in order for you to claim for damages successfully.
Should the airline carrier not be able to get to the bottom of things, even after 24 hours have passed, the insurer would be ready to act on your claim.
Tip: Simple. Wait it out for 24 hours and should inaction persist, report the matter to your insurer.
Besides the ones mentioned above, other notable exclusions include claims filed for damages that resulted from you participating in high-risk sports/activities, having travelled against government advice (in case of overseas travel), flouting traffic rules and the likes.
