How to Communicate Better With Yourself & Others?

Communication is integral since humans are all social animals and it is important for our mental health. In the last year, most of our communication has been taking place online rather than in-person. The person we spend the most time with, is ourselves. That’s why it is important to pay attention to how you talk to yourself. Changing your communication skills while speaking with yourself and others can help you stay positive and have a healthy mindset.

Tips to improve self-talk that help you stay positive and productive: 

  • Meditation

Meditating daily can help you focus on your inner voice and true emotions. When faced with negative thoughts or sad news you need to stop and ask yourself if you can channel it into something positive. If you cannot do anything productive with it, then it is best to leave the negativity behind. 

 

  • Journaling

Keeping a diary and writing in it regularly about your emotions and daily activity is another form of helpful self-talk. This is a good way to identify your emotional triggers and mental health weakness and begin to work on them. You should also try to focus on your good habits and everything that is going right for you. This exercise can help you truly understand yourself.

  • Verbal communication: 

While talking to someone through a video call or a phone call, you are communicating verbally. In such conversations, your tone of voice will decide if the other person is paying attention to you.

  • Non-verbal communication

Often you won’t need to say a word to get your point across. A simple expression like a raised eyebrow or a smile can say enough. Especially when you are on a video call, you can seem more engaged in the conversation if you don’t fold your arms and lean back on the chair. It’s important to have a positive body language.
