How is Eid Celebrated?

Eid is a joyful celebration that starts with prayers at the beginning of the day. Family and friends get together to wish each other Eid Mubarak and distribute gifts. The community also provides for the poor and needy among them. An important part of the celebrations is the traditional foods and sweets that are prepared for the three days of festivities. These foods include mutton preparations like biryani and korma and sweets like sheer khurma and phirni.

Sugar-Free Sheer Khurma Recipe

Try this sugar-free Sheer Khurma recipe for Ramzan Eid this year so that even those family members with diabetes can enjoy the feast. It is also a great recipe for those trying to lose weight

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 cup thin vermicelli
  • 2 tablespoons stevia powder (or as per taste)
  • 10 each almonds, pistachios and cashews (blanched and skins removed)
  • 2 tablespoons chironji seeds (soaked and skins removed)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom powder

Method:

Chop the nuts into small pieces. Heat 1 tablespoon ghee in a pan and roast the nuts and chironji seeds till slightly golden. Remove and keep aside. Heat another tablespoon of ghee and fry the vermicelli for a few minutes till soft. In a separate vessel, bring the milk to a boil and then simmer for 10 minutes. Add half of the nuts and seeds and all the vermicelli, stevia powder, and cardamom powder. Cook for another 5 minutes or till it thickens slightly. Take off the heat, sprinkle the rest of the nuts and seeds on top and serve while warm.

Date and Apple Kheer Recipe

This kheer that contains fruit is healthy, delicious, and also great for kids. Try it this year for Ramzan Eid.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ¼ cups milk
  • 1/3 cup dates (soaked and chopped)
  • 1 medium apple (peeled and grated)
  • 10 each almonds and cashews (blanched, skins removed)
  • 8-10 raisins
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom powder

Method:

Blend the soaked dates with a little bit of water to make a smooth paste. In a deep vessel, bring the milk to a boil and then simmer for five minutes. Add the date paste and mix it well into the milk. Next add the nuts, raisins, and cardamom powder. Cook for another 7-10 minutes or till the milk thickens slightly. Heat the ghee in a pan and add the grated apple. Cook till all the moisture has evaporated. Let the milk and the apple cool completely before adding them together and mixing well. Cool in the fridge for 1-2 hours before serving.
